This presentation will educate Law Enforcement officers who will be arriving at a violent crime scene how to help preserve evidence, control scene integrity and give insight as to why law enforcement officers should restrict access to certain location. The class will also describe how important discretion and professionalism are to facilitate the criminal investigation. Law enforcement officers will obtain a better understanding of common protocol required by investigators of the initial responding officers to violent crime scenes, objectives at the scene, approach suggestions, and working with EMS and firefighters to preserve scene integrity. Examples will be shown of cases where responses could have been better and of cases that were handled without compromising the scenes integrity. A missing person table top exercise will be conducted which will include class analysis and discussion of the response to the initial call, suggestions on what might have been handled differently and alternate investigative ideas. Scene photos, interview videos and recordings will be used to present the case.
