HazMat Awareness Refresher - Public Works

The awareness level refresher falls under 2 governing bodies and has similar content. HAZMAT falls under NFPA 472 and HAZWOPER is OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. This course is 4 hours in length. Awareness level training is designed for responders or personnel who may come into contact with a Hazardous materials incident and need to know some basic steps to ensure safety of themselves and others. It is also to ensure they know the appropriate actions and contacts/notifications. We will review the different containers, vehicles and trailers which may indicate the presence of HAZMAT. What documents and reference materials that can be used such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Department of Transportation emergency response guide (DOT ERG) and shipping papers. We will discuss the different levels of HAZMAT Training and the different types of teams that may respond. And finally, what information to pass on and notifications to make.
